Here are five key priorities for Enzo Maresca, the new manager of Chelsea.

In the latest twist of the Chelsea saga, Enzo Maresca has stepped into the Stamford Bridge spotlight, replacing Mauricio Pochettino in the dugout. Hailing from Spain, Maresca arrives in west London fresh from guiding Leicester City to Championship victory, showcasing his meticulous possession-oriented style, heavily influenced by Pep Guardiola.

But how can Maresca rejuvenate the atmosphere in the Blues’ dressing room and propel the team back to the summit of English football after a period of decline? Here are the primary tasks facing Maresca and his strategies to alleviate the constant turmoil that has plagued Chelsea in recent seasons:

1. Curbing Reckless Spending: Chelsea’s penchant for investing heavily in young talents hasn’t yielded significant returns, with only a few exceptions like Cole Palmer. Rather than indulging in another summer of lavish spending, Maresca should focus on streamlining the squad, perhaps by loaning out or offloading surplus youngsters.

2. Swift Start to the Season: To rally fan support and inject optimism, Maresca needs to ensure a strong start to the 2024/25 campaign. With past seasons marred by inconsistency, he must instill resilience and secure early points to dispel doubts.

3. Mitigating Injury Woes: While preventing injuries entirely is challenging, Maresca must minimize their impact. Chelsea’s previous season was derailed by numerous absences, notably Christopher Nkunku’s. Keeping key players fit, like Nkunku, will be crucial for sustaining momentum.

4. Finding Midfield Balance: Maresca faces the task of harmonizing the central midfield pairing, possibly between Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. If the duo struggles to complement each other, alternatives like Carney Chukwuemeka and Conor Gallagher should be explored to maintain possession and dynamism.

5. Resolving Conor Gallagher’s Future: Gallagher’s contract uncertainty looms large, despite his instrumental role in the team. Maresca must swiftly address Gallagher’s situation, ensuring clarity and stability, whether it involves retaining him or facilitating a smooth departure.

Navigating these priorities effectively could mark the beginning of a new chapter for Chelsea under Maresca’s guidance.
