Liverpool’s iconic former striker, Fernando Torres, has taken a significant step into management by being appointed head coach of Atlético Madrid’s B team, competing in the third tier of Spanish football.
The 40-year-old Spanish legend, who thrilled fans at Anfield during his glittering three-and-a-half-year spell, has patiently honed his coaching skills since retiring in 2019 after returning to Atlético.
Torres has been part of the coaching staff at his boyhood club since 2021 but will now get the chance to leave his mark in the dugout with this prestigious role, as reported by the Daily Mail.
This appointment marks a major career milestone for Torres, who scored 65 goals in 102 games for Liverpool between 2007 and 2011, leading Rafael Benitez’s era-defining side.
Having gained experience with Atlético’s youth teams over the past two years, the 2010 World Cup winner with Spain will now prove he can thrive in the hot seat.
Atlético has a proud tradition of giving their own a chance, with fellow club legend Diego Simeone managing the reserve team before taking over the first team in 2011.
While Torres’ playing career tapered off after leaving Liverpool for Chelsea in 2011, his bond with the Anfield faithful has never wavered. The striker once came agonizingly close to winning the Premier League title in 2009, scoring 24 goals as Liverpool finished runners-up.
