Manchester United have reportedly agreed personal terms with Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite.
United are in the market for at least one new centre-back this summer following the departure of Raphael Varane. Additional reinforcements are anticipated due to uncertainties surrounding the futures of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans.
The 21-year-old Branthwaite caught the attention of United after an impressive season, featuring in 41 matches across all competitions. According to The Times, United have initiated talks for a potential summer transfer.
Personal terms have reportedly been settled with Branthwaite’s representatives, aiming for a contract worth between £150,000 and £160,000 per week. The next step for United is to negotiate a transfer fee with Everton, who have valued Branthwaite at £70 million.
Everton are in a challenging financial position, having been docked eight points last season for breaches of Profit & Sustainability Rules. This situation may compel them to sell valuable assets like Branthwaite to stabilize their finances.
If Everton are to part ways with Branthwaite, they plan to demand a substantial fee, considering him one of the most promising young defenders in Europe.
United, working with an initial transfer budget of £50 million, have been encouraged by Sir Jim Ratcliffe to generate additional funds through player sales. High-profile players such as Antony, Casemiro, and Jadon Sancho are potentially available for transfer, which could provide the necessary funds to pursue a second centre-back.
Lille’s Leny Yoro is another target, although Real Madrid is currently seen as the favorite to secure his signature. United have also decided against pursuing Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt due to the high cost involved.
