France manager Didier Deschamps has disclosed that Kylian Mbappe suffered a suspected broken nose during their 1-0 victory over Austria at Euro 2024 on Monday night.
Mbappe, who played a pivotal role in setting up the only goal of the game, collided with Kevin Danso later in the match and remained on the turf at Dusseldorf Arena for treatment. Blood was visible on the face of the new Real Madrid forward, and he was cautioned for re-entering the field without the referee’s permission before eventually being substituted.
Speaking to TF1 post-match, Deschamps acknowledged the likelihood of Mbappe having a broken nose, stating, “A broken nose? Apparently yes. His nose is not right at all. We’ll see. Obviously, it’s tonight’s negative. It’s only a nose, but it’s very bothering for us.”
France now awaits further assessment to determine if Mbappe will miss any upcoming Euro 2024 fixtures. Despite the potential diagnosis of a broken nose, Mbappe could still play while wearing a protective mask if other injuries are ruled out.
In the event of Mbappe’s absence, Deschamps has several alternatives at his disposal, including substitutes Randal Kolo Muani and Olivier Giroud, while Antoine Griezmann could shift into a more advanced role if needed. Wide players Bradley Barcola and Kingsley Coman were unused substitutes in the match against Austria.
Next, Les Bleus will face the Netherlands on Friday, with both teams aiming to build on their successful starts to the tournament.
