Former Nigeria national team coach Finidi George revealed in an interview the unprofessional manner in which the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) terminated his contract.
After a disappointing international break, the Super Eagles’ prospects for qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are in serious jeopardy.
Nigeria was held to a 1-1 draw at home by South Africa and suffered a 1-2 defeat against Benin Republic in Abidjan in June.
With only 3 points from 4 games, the NFF deemed it necessary to overhaul the coaching staff without informing Finidi George that he would no longer be the coach.
“They met on Wednesday and decided to bring in a technical adviser. I have no issues with that,” Finidi told ESPN.
“But we had a three-hour meeting on Thursday, reviewing what happened and discussing the way forward. At no point did anyone mention hiring a technical adviser.
“I was on my way home and had just landed at the airport when I received a call about it. I was so surprised I had to pull over to read about it.
“For two days, I waited to see if they would have the courtesy to inform me, but I heard nothing from them. So, I made the decision to resign.
“Although our recent results in the qualifiers were disappointing, I was dedicated to getting our World Cup campaign back on track. However, with the recent changes in the coaching staff, I feel it’s time for me to step down.”
