The people of Rivers State have been urged to remain calm and law-abiding citizens in the face of the political crisis that has engulfed the state in recent days.
The call was made by a group known as the Sahelian Youths Forum for Good Governance and Advocacy (SYFGGA) during a press conference held at the NUJ Press Centre in Bauchi on Thursday.
According to the group, “Your governor is committed to your welfare and will continue to do everything possible to protect you and your properties. The SYFGGA stands in solidarity with you and assures you that we will continue to advocate for good governance and the rule of law.”
Comrade Aminu Harsanu Guyaba, National President, SYFGGA, who addressed the journalists on behalf of the group, stressed, Let us all support Governor Siminalayi Fubara in his quest to build a better Rivers State. Together, we can overcome the challenges and create a brighter future for all.”
According to him, “We are gathered here to commend and show our immense support for His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, for his recent bold and commendable decision to swear in local government caretaker committee chairmen.
“This decisive action was taken despite the attempts by former chairmen to cling to power even after exhausting their constitutional limits.”
The group stressed that Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Governor Fubara has demonstrated exceptional leadership and an unwavering commitment to the progress and development of Rivers State.”
“His administration has been marked by numerous achievements that have positively impacted the lives of the citizens. From infrastructure development to healthcare improvements and economic empowerment, Governor Fubara’s dedication to serving the people of Rivers State is evident in every step he takes,” it added.
The group further stated, “We appreciate Sir Siminalayi Fubara for his doggedness and resilience in the face of challenges.
“It is disheartening to see that some unscrupulous elements are working behind the scenes to distract him from the good work he has been doing.”
It added that these elements, having exhausted their own tenure, seek to continue exerting control over the state. This is not only undemocratic but also detrimental to the progress and stability of Rivers State.”
The group called upon Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who himself served as a two-term governor of Lagos State, to address the pressing issue because he understands the implications of external control over a governor and the potential harm it can cause to the state’s governance and development.
“We urge Mr. President to use his good office to ensure that Governor Fubara is allowed to govern without undue interference,” it stressed.
The group added that, “Furthermore, we call on the National Assembly to urgently look into the matter in Rivers State. It is imperative that Governor Fubara is given the space to work diligently for his people and provide them with the dividends of democracy.
“Legislative intervention is crucial to maintaining the sanctity of our democratic processes and ensuring that the will of the people is respected.”
It stressed that, as a Northern group, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to the newly appointed caretaker committee chairmen.
“We urge you to perform your duties diligently and to uphold the confidence that His Excellency has placed in you. Your role is pivotal in supporting the governor’s vision and ensuring the continued progress of Rivers State.”
