Chelsea is intensifying their pursuit of promising young talent by initiating talks with Boca Juniors for teenage defender Aaron Anselmino.
Inspired by Real Madrid’s success in uncovering talents like Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, and Endrick, Chelsea has been active in the South American market since Todd Boehly’s ownership group took charge in 2022.
Players such as Andrey Santos, Angelo Gabriel, Deivid Washington from Brazil, and upcoming arrivals like Willian Estevao and Kendry Paez have all been part of Chelsea’s recruitment strategy under this new approach.
Now, Chelsea’s attention is on Anselmino. According to The Athletic, initial discussions have begun with Boca Juniors, with negotiations reportedly underway regarding a transfer fee. However, Argentine reports suggesting a £17.2 million offer are yet to be confirmed.
Anselmino, who turned 19 in April, primarily plays as a centre-back and has featured in ten first-team matches so far in his career. His progress was briefly interrupted by an injury sustained in May after starting consecutive Copa Sudamericana matches the previous month.
Chelsea’s strategy of focusing on young talent extends beyond South America, with a significant portion of recent signings being under the age of 23. While some acquisitions like Cole Palmer have been successful, others are still in development.
Regarding outgoing transfers, Chelsea is poised to benefit financially from Ian Maatsen’s impending departure. Despite not establishing himself at Stamford Bridge, Maatsen’s impressive loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, culminating in the 2024 Champions League final, has led to an agreement with Aston Villa for a transfer fee slightly exceeding the £35 million clause in his Dortmund loan. This move ensures Maatsen’s stay in the Champions League next season, as Villa finished fourth in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.
