Fans have voiced their discontent regarding two England players following the Three Lions’ disappointing draw against Slovenia.
On Tuesday night, England entered the RheinEnergieSTADION knowing a win would secure their spot in the round of 16 as Group C winners. However, Gareth Southgate’s squad delivered yet another subpar performance, failing to break down Slovenia’s resilient defense.
Early in the second half, Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo was substituted in as England searched for a breakthrough.
Ultimately, the match concluded in a lackluster 0-0 draw, and England secured the group’s top spot thanks to Denmark and Serbia also drawing.
Throughout the game, England supporters criticized Southgate’s decision to start Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher and Newcastle United full-back Kieran Trippier.
One fan vented on social media: “Gallagher wasn’t the answer. Another dreadful first half, and we looked significantly better once Mainoo and Wharton came on.”
Another tweet read: “Mainoo made an instant impact. Gallagher should never have started over him.”
A third fan expressed: “Trippier is painfully average, but he must be doing something behind closed doors to remain one of Southgate’s favorites. At best, he should be third choice at right-back.”
Another supporter commented: “I would have replaced Trippier with Gomez. Trippier cutting inside all the time meant Foden had no space. Gomez has played there half the season for Liverpool.”
A fifth fan added: “Trippier looks completely lost at left-back. We had absolutely nothing.”
And another remarked: “I just want Gallagher gone. Let him be someone else’s problem.”
During halftime, former England goalkeeper Joe Hart shared his thoughts on BBC Radio 5 Live: “England seemed a bit disjointed, particularly down the left-hand side. Jude Bellingham has been drifting into that left-back position in the final third to combine with Phil Foden, which leaves Kieran Trippier unsure when to push forward. Foden is clearly trying to make an impact, but no one seems to be on his wavelength.”
