Italy has been knocked out of the ongoing Euro 2024 tournament in Germany. The defending champions suffered a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the first Round of 16 fixture on Saturday.
Switzerland dominated possession with 65% of the ball and had eight of the first nine attempts at goal before Remo Freuler opened the scoring. Ruben Vargas quickly doubled their lead just 27 seconds into the second half after Italy lost possession from their own kick-off.
Switzerland will now await the winner between England and Slovakia for their quarter-final match next weekend in Dusseldorf.
Italy becomes the third team in the last three European Championships to be eliminated in the round of 16 after winning the tournament.
