The Chairman of the Jigawa People’s Democratic Party (PDP) screening committee for candidates contesting in the forthcoming ward congress, Dr Aminu Abdullahi Taura, has stated that the committee will strictly adhere to the party’s constitution and congress guidelines during its assignment.
Dr Taura made this disclosure while addressing newsmen shortly after the inauguration of the committee at the party’s secretariat in Dutse, the state capital.
He emphasised, “This committee will perform its duties strictly according to the PDP constitution and Congress guidelines.”
Dr Taura explained that the party constituted the screening committee to ensure strict adherence to the party’s constitution, fairness, and justice for all members participating in the congress.
He noted, “According to the guidelines, any participating member must meet certain requirements to qualify, aspire, and occupy a position in our great party.”
He further detailed the requirements: “A person must be 18 years and older, must be a card-carrying member of the party for no less than 18 months, and must be in good financial standing with his or her annual check-up dues.”
Additionally, Dr Taura highlighted the importance of adhering to the quarter system of representation, stating, “A quarter system of representation is also something to which we will strictly adhere.
“This is to avoid any marginalisation of any area across all 287 political wards.”
Dr. Taura added, “At this time, the party gave new instructions and will be part of the guidelines for next week’s congress on women.
“The new instruction is that six positions should be reserved for women in each of the political wards in the state. This is in line with women’s efforts and commitment when it comes to issues of voting.
“All can testify that women are the largest number in any polling unit on election days.”
“We were selected to handle the assignment on trust and confidence, not because we were above others but as an honour and representation as it is for very few of us to do the job.”
He told the committee members to be ready and prepare for the work: “It would be very simple, as it is an internal matter to which all members are willing to give their contribution in order to succeed.”
