Kalvin Phillips has reportedly told Manchester City that he wants to leave the club permanently this summer, ending his challenging stint at the Etihad, according to Sportskeeda. English journalist Pete O’Rourke states that Phillips has expressed his desire to secure a permanent transfer rather than another loan move.

Since joining Manchester City from Leeds United for £43 million in July 2022, Phillips has struggled for game time, starting only six matches and scoring once in 31 appearances. His loan spell at West Ham United during the second half of last season was also disappointing, leading to his exclusion from the team.

Manchester City is said to be open to selling Phillips for around £20 million, with Aston Villa and Everton showing interest. However, both clubs prefer a loan deal, which Phillips is not willing to consider.

Phillips’ request to leave is not surprising given his limited opportunities and difficulties adapting to Pep Guardiola’s system. Though he has four years remaining on his contract, it seems his time at Manchester City is nearing its end.

Guardiola recently commented on Phillips’ situation, saying, “We’ll see what happens with Phillips. He’s training really well and played a strong first half against Celtic. He’s recovering from an injury, which is why we limited his minutes. But we’ll see; he understands the situation.”

A move away from Manchester City could provide Phillips with a fresh start and an opportunity to revive his career, as he was once one of the Premier League’s most promising talents.
