Niger govt denies hardship protest despite video evidence

Despite video evidence, Niger State Government has debunked that some youths trooped to the streets of Suleja in Suleja Local Government Area of the State to protest the ongoing cost of living crisis in Nigeria.

Nigerian Tribune had reported and published how the protesters, in the early hours of Monday, 29th July, 2024, carried placards with the inscriptions such as ‘Enough is Enough’, ‘Stop Anti-Masses Policies’, ‘We Are Not Slaves In Our Country’, ‘Hardship Is Unbearable’, ‘Fuel Subsidy Must Be Back’, amongst others.

The protesters were said to have marched on the streets of the Council areas as they allegedly chanted anti-government slogans while expressing their displeasure.

Nigerian Tribune caught up with some of the protesters on the Abuja-Kaduna highways axis of Suleja and attempted to speak with them but the efforts proved abortive as they declined being interviewed by our Correspondent for obvious reasons.

It reads in part: “The Niger State Government firmly dismisses recent online reports by a media platform claiming that protests have commenced on the Abuja-Kaduna Highways in Niger State.

“We assure all residents that these reports are unfounded and that no such protests have taken place in the state.

“The Chairman of Suleja Local Government, Ishaku Bawa Naibi, has confirmed that no protests occurred in his jurisdiction. Additionally, security reports from the area corroborate this statement, indicating that there have been no disruptions or demonstrations in the State,” she maintained.
