In bid to mitigate potential chaos and ensure a peaceful resolution to the country’s challenges, the National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN) has issued a passionate appeal to Nigerians, urging restraint amidst plans for a nationwide hunger protest, scheduled to commence on August 1, 2024.
In a statement, Executive Director Amb. Blessing A. Akinlosotu emphasized the need for constructive dialogue and collaboration, stressing that the country’s complexities require a thoughtful and inclusive approach.
“We understand the frustrations and pain caused by the high cost of living, hunger, insecurity, and joblessness in Nigeria. These are genuine concerns that warrant attention and action.
“However, we must approach these issues with a constructive mindset, recognizing that protests have the capacity to impact countries both positively and negatively. We must be mindful of the potential consequences, learning from examples such as Venezuela, Syria, Brazil, and Hong Kong, where protests have led to widespread violence, economic collapse, and human suffering.”
Akinlosotu acknowledged the government’s efforts to address the country’s challenges, citing the implementation of policies aimed at eradicating corruption and inefficiency, reducing debt, and attracting foreign investment.
“We believe that the actualization of Local Government Autonomy and the approval of sales of crude oil to local refineries in Naira are bold steps towards addressing our challenges. These initiatives demonstrate a commitment to decentralizing power, promoting economic growth, and enhancing the welfare of Nigerians.
We must salute the President’s openness and sincerity of purpose and his public acknowledgment of the enormous challenges facing us is an indication of a patriotic and genuine commitment to tackle the issues.”
The NCSCN urged Nigerians to engage in constructive dialogue and collaboration, rather than resorting to protests that could have destructive consequences.
“We call on all stakeholders – government, civil society, and the citizenry – to join hands in building a Nigeria where justice, equity, and prosperity are accessible to all.
We must work together to navigate these challenges, leveraging our diversity and collective expertise to ensure a stable and prosperous future for our country. By doing so, we can create an environment conducive to economic growth, social cohesion, and political stability.”
