The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has criticized Favour Ofili amid rumors that she may leave Team Nigeria following a disappointing performance in Paris.
Tensions arose between Ofili and the AFN after her name was omitted from the list for the women’s 100m race. While the AFN claimed the omission was unintentional and that Ofili was only registered for the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relays, the athlete believes the federation shares some of the blame.
In response to the situation, the AFN has stated that they have qualified athletes ready to replace Ofili should she decide to represent another country. An AFN representative told The Guardian that they would not stand in her way if she chooses to leave.
The representative added, “If Ofili is truly considering switching her allegiance, it might be difficult for the AFN to stop her. However, she should be aware that World Athletics rules require a three-year waiting period before she can compete for another nation, meaning she would be ineligible to participate in any athletics event until late 2027.”
The AFN has made it clear that they are not concerned about Ofili potentially leaving Nigeria, emphasizing that she is free to make her own decision.
