Alisson Explains the Difference Between Arne Slot and Jurgen Klopp’s Tactics

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has highlighted the differences between Arne Slot’s tactics and those of his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp, known for his “heavy metal football” and gegenpressing, built his success on high-intensity pressing and fast breaks. In contrast, Slot, rooted in Dutch football philosophy, emphasizes short passing and building play from the back.

“Under Slot, the focus is more on short passes to build from the back and create spaces to exploit,” Alisson explained to LiverpoolFC.com. “The basic principles haven’t changed much for us, but the formation and approach have shifted. It’s been beneficial for me to have more players closer by to connect with.”

Slot’s approach was evident in Liverpool’s opening Premier League fixture against Ipswich Town, where he made effective adjustments during a lackluster first half to secure a 2-0 victory and a clean sheet.

Alisson praised Slot’s emphasis on defensive solidity. “He wants us to achieve more clean sheets and be solid and compact,” Alisson said. “We know our attacking quality is high, so if we can match that with our defense, we’ll have a strong season and meet our goals.”
