Guardiola praises Haaland but asserts that Messi is the most complete forward ever.

Pep Guardiola has praised Lionel Messi as the most complete center-forward in football history, while downplaying comparisons with Erling Haaland.

In an interview with beIN Sports, Guardiola emphasized that, despite Haaland’s impressive form, Messi remains unparalleled. When asked if Haaland was the best center-forward ever, Guardiola responded, “The most complete center forward ever seen is Lionel Messi.”

This statement followed Haaland’s spectacular hat-trick in Manchester City’s 4-1 comeback victory over Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town. Ipswich took an early lead with a goal from Sammie Szmodics, but Haaland quickly equalized with a penalty. He then scored again before Kevin De Bruyne added a third, and Haaland completed his hat-trick late in the game.

Despite Haaland’s standout performance, Guardiola tempered the enthusiasm, noting that while Haaland is comparable to greats like Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, Messi remains the best to ever play the game.

City’s victory over Ipswich solidifies their position at the top of the table, continuing their perfect start to the season.
