The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has officially announced that local government elections in the state’s 18 local government areas and 203 wards will take place on January 18, 2025.
This new date was revealed by the ODIEC Chairman, Dr. Joseph Aremo, during a stakeholders’ meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Akure.
The elections, initially rescheduled for July 13, 2024, were postponed indefinitely due to the non-compliance of political parties with electoral guidelines.
Dr Aremo clarified that the elections were not cancelled but postponed to ensure proper adherence to the necessary processes.
He assured Ondo State residents that ODIEC is committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections and encouraged political parties to submit validated lists of candidates if they had already conducted primaries before the postponement.
Dr. Aremo also outlined the key dates leading up to the elections, including the completion of party primaries and candidate validation from November 25 to December 7, 2024, and the submission of candidate forms by December 9, 2024.
Campaigns by political parties will run from December 23, 2024, to January 16, 2025, with non-sensitive materials distributed to local governments between January 6 and January 10, 2025.
The Chairman of the Ondo State chapter of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Olaoluwa Adesanya, expressed confidence in ODIEC’s preparations and assured cooperation from political parties to ensure a smooth electoral process.
