Manchester United’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, has clarified that Jadon Sancho was not forced out of the club.
Sancho joined Chelsea on a loan deal on transfer deadline day, even after seeming to have reconciled with United manager Erik ten Hag following their disagreement last season. As part of the loan agreement, Chelsea is obligated to buy Sancho at the end of the season for a fee between £20-£25 million.
Ashworth dismissed claims that Sancho was pushed out of Old Trafford because of his fallout with Ten Hag.
When asked if the disagreement with Ten Hag meant there was no future for Sancho at United, Ashworth responded:
“It had nothing to do with that. It was a decision we made—if it’s right for Jadon and for us to move on. He wanted to explore the opportunity at Chelsea, just like Scott McTominay wanted to explore the opportunity at Napoli and Aaron Wan-Bissaka wanted to explore the opportunity at West Ham. We’re not in a position where we’re forcing players out of the club.”
