As part of his youth empowerment initiatives, Hon. Afam Ogene, Member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, has successfully trained 100 youths in renewable energy skills.
The three-day program, which commenced on Thursday, was organized in collaboration with the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA) and MODESCOM Solution Ltd.
The training, focused on solar energy installation and maintenance, provided participants with hands-on experience to thrive in the growing renewable energy sector.
Hon. Ogene, who also serves as Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy, stated that beneficiaries would receive start-up equipment, funding, and logistical support to help them establish careers in the field.
This initiative aims to reduce youth unemployment in Ogbaru Federal Constituency by promoting self-reliance and fostering economic growth. By equipping participants with practical skills, the program seeks to curb restiveness and discourage engagement in criminal activities.
Originally planned for 100 participants, the training attracted a large number of eager youths from the 16 wards of the constituency.
Hon. Ogene highlighted the importance of engaging the youth in meaningful ways to combat the high levels of unemployment and economic hardship in the country. He leveraged partnerships with both local and international organizations to ensure the provision of quality training in renewable energy services.
In addressing the participants, Hon. Ogene stressed the need for urgent measures to address the unemployment crisis and underemployment among Nigerian youths.
He assured the participants that the training would empower them to earn a sustainable living and become entrepreneurs in the renewable energy sector.
Participants, who included both male and female youths below 40, received tools and equipment to kickstart their ventures. A monitoring system will be implemented to track their progress and ensure the success of the initiative.

Resource person Mr. Suraj Shittu praised the enthusiasm of the participants, noting the vast potential of solar energy technology to create opportunities for self-reliance. He emphasized how renewable energy can contribute to both personal and community development.
Several participants expressed their gratitude for the opportunity. Nnamdi Obiekie shared his excitement about learning the intricacies of solar energy installation and maintenance, while James Adione acknowledged the program’s potential to transform his economic prospects.
Miss Fate John, one of the female participants, was particularly impressed by the inclusiveness of the training, dispelling the myth that solar panel installation is a male-only field.
Local stakeholders lauded Hon. Ogene for bringing such a transformative program to the constituency, viewing it as a vital step toward sustainable development and addressing the unemployment crisis.
