Randy Waldrum, head coach of Nigeria’s Super Falcons, has stepped down from his role, giving the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) time to find a replacement. Waldrum, an American, submitted his resignation with immediate effect, leaving the Super Falcons without a coach.
According to Pulse Sports, this decision comes just over a month after he expressed his affection for the team following a disappointing performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Despite this, health issues concerning his wife forced him to resign.
A post from OgaNla Media confirmed that Waldrum’s departure is linked to his wife’s health. In a letter dated September 12th, the coach explained his reasons: “It’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues and the concerns that come with it. After much thought and consideration, I am hereby resigning my position as Head Coach of the Super Falcons. This will allow the NFF ample time to find the next manager to lead this incredible team.”
Waldrum will be remembered for leading Nigeria to the round of 16 in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup (FIFAWWC), where the Super Falcons emerged from a challenging group, defeating hosts Australia 3-2, and holding European Champions England to a goalless draw after 120 minutes.
Initially, Waldrum had expressed his desire to continue despite the team’s poor performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where Nigeria crashed out in the group stage without securing a win. After guiding the Super Falcons back to the Olympics after a 16-year absence by defeating South Africa in the qualifiers, the Olympics was meant to be his final assignment. As of now, the NFF has not responded to his resignation letter.
