Tobi Amusan remains Nigeria’s best chance for a medal at this year’s Olympic Games in Paris, France.
So far, the West African nation has yet to secure a podium finish, with the competition concluding on Sunday, August 11.
Amusan, the world record holder in the 100m hurdles, is set to compete in the semi-finals on Friday. She advanced from the heats on Wednesday, clocking a time of 12.49 seconds, ahead of the USA’s Alaysha Johnson, who finished second in 12.61 seconds, and Janeek Brown, who took third with 12.84 seconds.
In the semi-finals, Amusan will face tough competition from reigning world champion Danielle Williams, USA’s Grace Stark, and Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas as she aims to qualify for the final.
The top two finishers in each semi-final will automatically advance to Saturday’s final, with the next two fastest runners also securing spots.
Amusan, a three-time consecutive Diamond League winner, two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist, two-time African champion, and three-time African Games gold medallist, has already represented Nigeria in two Olympic Games (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020).
