According to a report, Manchester United is now less likely to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager, as they have “cooled their interest” in him. The club is currently conducting an end-of-season review, during which Erik ten Hag’s position may undergo changes. Despite their recent FA Cup victory over rivals Manchester City, Ten Hag has yet to receive confirmation regarding his role for the upcoming season.
The Times reports that if United does decide to part ways with Ten Hag, Pochettino will not be considered as his replacement. Despite being a potential candidate for the Old Trafford position after departing from Chelsea at the end of the 2023/24 season, Pochettino’s recent interview with United is not expected to lead to further interest from the club.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time United has shown interest in Pochettino before ultimately pursuing other options. They first targeted him in 2018 following Jose Mourinho’s departure, but ultimately appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the full-time manager. In 2022, Pochettino was again on United’s radar, but they opted for Ten Hag, then managing Ajax. Despite these developments, Pochettino still holds admirers at United and maintains a positive relationship with club legend Sir Alex Ferguson.
Furthermore, the report mentions that Thomas Tuchel has removed himself from contention for the United job, while Brentford denies any approach for Thomas Frank, despite reports suggesting otherwise. Roberto De Zerbi and Gareth Southgate have also been linked to the managerial role at United.
